Wondering if landscaping increases the value of your property? Yes, landscaping will increase your property value by between ten and twenty percent. It should be carried out in front of the house to increase the curb appeal and have the buyers pulling up and wanting to see more.
Don’t waste too much money out the back, invest it all in the front garden. The following five things will add property value to your home.
.A stone terrace incorporated into landscaping will add property value. Remember your gorgeous new stonework terrace will be the back-drop for all plantings, so it is important that the stone can be glimpsed through the greenery from the street.
The warmth of the stone through the green and changing landscape will give you the best landscaping outcome for your project. There are some really beautiful stones and I envisage natural stonework steps leading up to your stone terrace in lovely rough-hewn local granite or stone.
Bayberry, Beach Plum, Button Bush, Red Twig Dogwood, and Weigela all lose their leaves and will let the sun reach your stone patio. All these shrubs are deciduous, and if you wanted to go for evergreen shrubs try Juniper, Boxwood, or Andromeda.
The shrubs will be planted across the front of your block allowing for a view of the stonework, it is nice to plant them next to a different one to optimize the diversity in green foliage.
Maples, Beech, Magnolia, Sweetgum, and Weeping Alaska Cedar. The trees will go to either side of your home, graduating in height, and the size of your land will dictate how many trees.
Remember they will lose their leave in Winter, so you will have good Winter light on your patio and shade in Summer. This will allow the sun to reach your garden in Winter, and keep it alive until the warm weather comes and the leaves will give you mulch for your composting.
This will be set back right in front of the custom stonework, so the choice should be based on blending in with the color of your stone. The size of the Fountain will depend on your budget. A Fountain draws the eye and is restful, and if you only have a small block it doesn’t have to be too big.
It is also nice for the birds to drink out of in hot weather. Have it installed by your landscaping team, and get some appropriate backlighting to add to your curb appeal at night. Add some security lighting that comes on at night if anyone trespasses on your property.
A lot of areas don’t have a fence, and I love this look. Right along your boundary line in front, plant some Lavender, use a couple of different types, and plant densely, as in Summer often some of it will die (too much rain).
Behind the Lavender plant some native plants, as they provide natural food and shelter for birds. Native landscaping is sustainable and native plants won’t die easily, Blueberry, Native Azalea, and Native Daisy.
No point in having a turf lawn as this creates work and does not sustain the wildlife. The University of Delaware says that protecting Native Pollinators is critical to the success of future crops, so by planting native flowers you are doing your bit for the environment.
The Common Elderberry is native to Cape Cod and grows well in both wet and dry acidic soils, has lovely white flowers and edible berries. Birds will eat the fruit and the native plant will look amazing most of the year around.
Plant natives on either side of your stepping stones leading up to the terrace, you may want to run a watering line along the side of the pathway for automatic watering, to keep your garden alive in the heat of summer.
Your amazing garden will be the envy of the neighborhood and will attract the native birds. It will be cool and inviting in summer, and in Winter you will get enough light to sustain you. There are many other things that you can do, like adding pots on your stone patio, and then you can sit and admire the view while enjoying the value that landscaping has added to your property.
